On Sunday, 28 December 2014, an AirAsia flight QZ8501 on an Airbus 320 with 162 people on board lost contact with ground control and crashed in the Java Sea. It was the third largest aircraft catastrophe by number of casualties in 2014. Overall death count in 2014 reached 1,329 people, but it was not a "record" year. In fact, 2014 year was 59th by rank of fatalities in plane crash accidents in history.
