Facts:

  • US universities have received foreign gift of US$ 9.2 billion from across the globe for the period 2012 to 2018.
  • Qatar has contributed highest with US$ 1.36 billion which is 14.78% of total contribution.
  • GCC Countries (Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE) have contributed highest as group US$ 2.2 billion which is 24.1% (2.2/9.2*100).
  • European Union has contributed US$ 1.95 billion which is 21.2% of total contribution.
  • China has contributed US$0.48 billion (5.27%) whereas India's contribution stand at US$0.33billion (3.6%).

Gulf countries have been pouring millions of dollars into top academic institutions in the US. Six Gulf Countries have provided $2.2bn to US universities since the beginning of 2012 to June 2018, according to a US education department’s Foreign Gifts and Contracts Report. Qatar, the world’s richest state in terms of per capita (Source: IMF-GDP per capita, current prices), led with $1.3bn, followed by Saudi Arabia with $580.5m and the UAE with $213m.
