Akamai’s globally-distributed Intelligent Platform provides data on many metrics, namely: connection speeds, attack traffic, network connectivity/availability leading Web properties and digital media providers. Quarterly Akamai publishes the State of the Internet/Security Report based on this data.

  • Internet Connectivity: During the first quarter of 2017, Akamai observed attack traffic originating from source IP addresses in 239 unique countries/regions, it is 0.9% increase from the number seen in the fourth quarter of 2016.
  • Attack Traffic: In the fourth quarter of 2014, China was in the top slot, growing to 41% of observed attack traffic. Indonesia saw a significant increase in observed attack traffic, more than doubling to 15%, while the United States increased nominally to 13%.
  • Internet and Broadband Adoption: Looking at connection speeds, the global average connection speed grew 15% to 7,2 Mbps. At a country/region level, South Korea continued to have the highest average connection speed at 28.6 Mbps but Singapour had the highest average peak connection speed at 109 Mbps. 4 Mbps broadband adoption has grown globally in the first quarter to 82% up 3,3% from the previous quarter. As it has for many quarters, leading positions takes South Korea in all three broadband tiers with adoption rates of 85%, 69%, and 40% respectively, after quarterly increases of 3.1%, 7.8%, and 16%.
